What is the difference between eps and xps ?

1. EPS ,expanded polystyrene and XPS, extruded polystyrene , which means, this two types of material are based on Polystyrene or PS with different production methods: as expanded foam , or as continues extruded foam.  

Backgrounds of PS: It is a colorless and transparent thermoplastic with a glass transition temperature above 100 ° C, can be used to make a variety of disposable containers such as PS food box. PS has varieties of GPPS, EPS, HIPS, SPS.  


2. Two material in production process  Both EPS & XPS do have foam process, while XPS board is been continued extruded, and EPS board/block is been moulded. 

 

XPS Material Processing Details  XPS mixed with foam agent and other agents to go through extruded machinery to be produced of XPS board, which has honeycomb structure of a closed cell ration of over 99% and features very lower water absorption and lower thermal conductivity. 


XPS has a perfect closed cell honeycomb structure with a closed cell ratio of over 99%, very low water absorption (almost no water absorption) and thermal conductivity. 

 

Both EPS board and XPS board have the very similar characteristics, such as compressive strength, thermal conductivity, flame retardancy , temperature and different climate resistance, specific heat capacity, linear expansion coefficient, impact strength , dimensional resistance, apparent density etc.  Both material can be made board with density range of about 10 KG/m ³ to 30 KG/m ³  

 

3. Application  

 

EPS can be widely applied in construction, insulation, packaging, refrigeration, daily necessities, industrial casting and other fields. It is also used to display the production of venues, merchandise cabinets, advertising signs and toys. In order to meet the national building energysaving requirements, it is mainly applied to external wall insulation, internal wall insulation and floor heating. 

 

XPS is widely used in building roof insulation, floor heating, steel roofing, building wall insulation, building floor moisturizing, square ground, ground frost heave control, central air conditioning ventilation duct, airport runway insulation, high-speed railway subgrade, etc. 

 

EPS and XPS is mutual substituted in field of insulation, such as building insulation, floor heating, and refrigeration transportation. While EPS is moulded it has advantages in packing products while XPS products is structured perfect , it has advantages in high pressure-resistant filling, airport runway, railway subgrade and other fields.
