| thermal under floor system (TUFS), which saves energy and moderates building temperatures, and is less expensive than traditional floor slabs to install. This 40- mm thick tongue and grooved, expanded polystyrene sheet is glued together and placed beneath cast concrete floor slabs, replacing 20 mm to 25 mm of concrete thickness.
Plastic sheeting normally required for waterproofing is not necessary with this system because the polystyrene acts as an insulator and as a damp-proof membrane. Material costs of the system are about 10% less than conventional concrete floors, but TUFS has the added benefit of ongoing energy savings owing to the insulation effect of the polystyrene.
